"Narratives In the Service of Reality: The Imaginings of artist Christopher Burch," is a docu-interview film exploring the works, ideas and influences of contemporary artist Christopher Burch. The works of Christopher Burch report from the intersections of re-invention, mythology, folklore and history. Depicting, bodies, acts, objects and ideas within a process of co-emergence, slippage, and simultaneity. Burch’s aesthetic, fully realized as a surreal personal language, utilizes the grotesque, the abject, and the ironic, as accomplices within his own form of storytelling. Truths and untruths hold equal value within his works; both hinge upon the human imagination as the locus of their power. Through storytelling, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Burch's works find their greatest strength in his eloquent, thoughtful manner of interpreting and investigating some of America’s most disquieting realities.
In “Narratives…” Burch highlights two major influences in the shaping of his particular approach to art making. Richard Pryor and Amiri Baraka whose genius merged the comedic, the personal, the poetic and the political- transforming testimony into subversion.
