The exhibition consist of 25 photographic images and field recordings capturing the everyday beauty and surprise of Addis Ababa and Lalibela, Ethiopia during the time of Fasika, which is marked by 55-days of fasting where no meat or animal products, including milk and butter, are eaten, and culminates in an Easter celebration. The images range from spontaneous portraits, landscapes, to visual stories of day-to-day living in two cities rich with life, culture, ritual, and history.

Exhibition Statement

Time Bound is the first solo exhibition of Cheeraz Gormon's photographic work in 27 years. The exhibition consist of 25 photographic images and field recordings taken in 2016, capturing the everyday beauty and surprise of Addis Ababa and Lalibela, Ethiopia during the time of Fasika, which is marked by 55-days of fasting where no meat or animal products, including milk and butter, are eaten, and culminates in an Easter celebration. The images range from spontaneous portraits, landscapes, to visual stories of day-to-day living in two cities rich with life, culture, ritual, and history.

On a more personal note, Cheeraz says, "The images in this show were taken 10-years ago at a time in my personal history where I needed space from America, and all the losses and transitional turns my life had taken since 2011. The weight of what was going on in my hometown of St. Louis City and the neighboring county of Ferguson took a toll on my belief that there was still wonder in the world. Becoming an apexart International Arts Fellow felt like a prayer answered. (Shout out to Mike Behle for recommending me.) In giving myself permission to exist fully in a country where I didn't know the language or anyone, I was able to capture moments, photographic and sonic, that tethered her back to my own humanity and dignity, reintroducing a sense of awe back into my life. This work also signals the return to a medium I had long loved, yet underutilized in my approach as a storyteller. The result, a reclamation of being present to the every day poetics in life."

Cheeraz Gormon is an award-winning poet, writer, creative director, storyteller, and actress who works in various storytelling and visual arts mediums. She currently resides in hometown of St. Louis, MO, where she is co-host of the Neighborhood Storytelling Practice with InvestSTL and serves as lead end-of-life doula at Presence & Care, LLC. You may also find her in her garden or on a dance floor.

“የተገደበ ጊዜ" በሚል ርዕስ በሺራዝ ጎርመን የቀረበው ይህ የፎቶግራፍ ሥራዎችን አርቲስቷ በ27 ዓመታት ውስጥ ለመጀመሪያ ጊዜ ብቻዋን ያቀረበችው የጥበብ አውደ ርዕይ ነው። አውደ ርዕዩ በ2016 ዓ.ም. የተነሱ 25 የፎቶግራፍ ምስሎችን እና የቦታውን ድምቀት የሚመዘግቡ የድምፅ ቅጂዎችን ያካትታል። እነዚህ ሥራዎች በፋሲካ ወቅት በኢትዮጵያ በተይም በአዲስ አበባና ላሊበላ ከተሞች የሚታየውን የዕለት ተዕለት ውበትና አስደናቂ ገጽታ ይቃኛሉ። እንደሚታወቀው ይህ በዓል ለ55 ቀናት ከሚቆየው የጾም ጊዜ መደምደሚያ በኋላ የሚከበር ሲሆን፣ በዚህም የጾም ወቅት ሥጋና እንደ ወተትና ቅቤ ያሉ ከእንስሳት የሚገኙ ምርቶች መመገብ አይፈቀድም። በአውደ ርዕዩ የቀረቡት ምስሎች ያለቅድመ ዝግጅት የተነሱ የሰዎች ምስሎችና የአካባቢውን የተፈጥሮ አቀማመጥ እንዲሁም በእነዚህ ሁለት ከተሞች የሚታየውን መጠነ-ሰፊና የበለጸገ የዕለት ተዕለት የሕይወት፣ የባህል፣ የልምድና የታሪክ ኑሮ አካሄድ በምስላዊ ትረካ ይዳስሳል።

በግል ሕይወቷ ያለውን ተሞክሮ አስመክቶ ሺራዝ እንዲህ ትላለች፦

“በዚህ አውደ ርዕዩ የቀረቡት ምስሎች የተነሱት ከ10 ዓመታት በፊት ነው። ወቅቱ ከ2011 ዓ.ም. ጀምሮ በሕይወቴ ካጋጠሙኝ ፈተናዎችና በግል ሕይወቴ ውስጥ ከተከሰተው የለውጥ አዙሪት እንዲሁም ከአሜሪካ እራሴን ለጥቂት ጊዜ ማራቅ የፈለግሁበት ጊዜ ነበር። በጊዜው የትውልድ ከተማዬ በሆነችው በሴንት ሉዊስና በአጎራባችዋ ፈርግሰን ካውንቲ ተፈጥረው የነበሩት ክስተቶች በውስጤ የፈጠረብኝን ተፅዕኖና የአመለካከት ጫና ለመለወጥ በዓለማችን ወዳሉት አስደናቂና ውብ ነገሮች እንዳተኩር ተጽዕኖ አሳደሩብኝ። የኤፔክስ አለምዓቀፍ ስነጥበብ ልዑክ ሆኜ መመረጤ የጸሎቴ መልስ የተገኘልኝ ያህል ተሰማኝ። (በዚህ አጋጣሚ ለዚህ ዕድል ያጨኝን ማይክ ቤህል ለማመስገን እወዳለሁ።)

ቋንቋውን የማላውቀውና ማንንም በማላውቅበት አገር ውስጥ ሙሉ በሙሉ በዕምነት ለመኖር ለራሴ ፈቃድ ሰጥቼ በመንቀሳቀስ፣ ወደ ራሴ ሰብዓዊነትና የማንነት ክብሬ የመለሱኝን የፎቶግራፍ ዕይታዎችና የድምፅ ቅጅዎችን ለማስቀረት ቻልኩ። ይህም ቆይታዬ በሕይወቴ ውስጥ ጠፍቶ የነበረውን የአድናቆትና የመማረክ ስሜት እንደገና እንድገነባ አደረገኝ።

ይህ ሥራ ከረጅም ጊዜ ጀምሮ የምወደውን፣ ሆኖም እንደታሪክ ተራኪ በበቂ መልኩ ያልተጠቀምኩበትን የጥበብ መገለጫ ወደሆነው የፎቶግራፍ ማሳያ ዘዴ እንደገና ለመመለስ ዕድል ሰቶኛል። የዚህ ሥራ ውጤት በየዕለቱ በሕይወታችን ውስጥ ለሚከሰቱት የጥበብ ውበቶች መልሶ ማሳያ መስታወት ሆኖ ሊታይ ይችላል።"

ሺራዝ ጎርመን ለሽልማት የበቃችና ዕውቅናን የተላበሰች ገጣሚ፣ ጸሐፊ፣ የፈጠራ ዳይሬክተር፣ የታሪክ ተረኪ እና ተዋናይት ስትሆን፣ የተለያዩ የታሪክ አተራረክና የምስላዊ ጥበብ መገለጫ መድረኮች ሥራዎቿን በማቅረብ ት ታወቃለች። በአሁኑ ወቅት በትውልድ ከተማዋ በሴንት ሉዊስ፣ ሚዙሪ ኗሪ ስትሆን፣ ከኢንቨስት ሴንት ሉዊስ ከተባለው ተቋም ጋር በመተባበር የሚቀርበው የመኖሪያ አካባቢ የታሪክ ትረካ ልምድ ልውውጥ ፕሮግራም ተባባሪ አቅራቢ በመሆን ታገለግላለች። ከዚህ በተጨማሪ በፕሬዘንስ እና ኬር በተሰኘ ድርጅት ውስጥ የሕይወት-ፍጻሜ እንክብካቤ ድጋፍ መሪ ሆና ታገለግላለች። ከመደበኛ የስራ ሰዓቷ ውጭ በአትክልት ቦታዋ ውስጥ ስትኮተኩት ወይም በዳንስ መድረኮች ላይ ስትወዛወዝ ልታገኟት ትችላላችሁ።
